California Begins Development of Environmentally Preferable School Building Products Online Database

Study Show Cockroaches and Pesticides May Cause Asthma in Youth
Dec 11, 2003:
New study investigates whether the timing of environmental exposures are associated with asthma occurrence by age five.   Study finds exposure to cockroaches, pesticides and herbicides, along with other factors, are linked to asthma diagnosis before age five. Full study.

EPA Grants for School IPM Now Available
Oct 16, 2003: On behalf of the US EPA, the National Foundation for IPM Education is currently soliciting for grant proposals open to organizations that propose work to reduce the risk and use of pesticides in agricultural and non-agricultural settings. Sixteen Organizations Recognized

UC Davis Expands Graduate IPM Program
Oct 14, 2003: UC Davis now offers an M.S. in Integrated Pest Management.  Accepted students will study the application of biology, ecology and technology for environ- mentally sound and sustainable manage- ment of agricultural and horticultural pests.  This multidisciplinary program emphasizes diagnosis, prevention and management of a broad range of problems in the field.

Pittsburgh School District Makes the Grade with IPM
Sept 19, 2003:  With 36,000 students spread out over almost one hundred buildings, managing pests in and around those buildings could easily be an overwhelming challenge.  The Pittsburgh School District's pest management program has shown a great deal of success, however, with a little help from IPM. States Sue EPA for Failing to Protect Children From Pesticides
Sept 19, 2003: 
New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey Attorney Generals have sued the federal EPA for failing to protect children from the risks of eating food containing excessive pesticide residues. Full article.

IR-4 Biopesticide Research Program Announces Request for Grant Proposals
Sept 19, 2003: 
The IR-4 Biopesticide Research Program announces a request for grant proposals for funding of efficacy research in 2004.  With newer targeted conventional chemicals there is interest in resistance management to maintain the utility of those products. Therefore, IR-4 is especially interested in proposals containing biopesticides as resistance management tools, rotated with conventional products. More.

EPA Region 5 Awards the IPM Institute for Significant Achievements in Promoting School IPM
Sept 12, 2003: The U.S. EPA views protecting children's health as one of its highest priorities.  In the absence of Federal legislation or laws requiring IPM in schools, particular State agencies, organizations, and individuals in the upper Midwest have worked hard throughout their State to promote IPM in schools.  Several of these individuals have risen to the status of National leaders in the field, taking their successes learned in the Midwest to many other States. Wisconsin Eco-Potato Project Announces Accomplishments and Directions

The Wisconsin Eco-Potato Project, a collaborative effort between the World Wildlife Fund, Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association and University of Wisconsin, makes available a two-page handout that briefly summarizes their accomplishments and directions since 2000.  This year, over 8500 acres enrolled in the Project. Transition Committee Volunteers Needed for 5th National IPM Symposium
Aug 20, 2003:
The 4th National IPM Symposium, held in Indianapolis April 8 – 10, 2003 , was attended by over 700 individuals representing the many disciplines and interests of the IPM community.  A transition committee has begun planning for the 5th National IPM Symposium, to be held in early 2006.  Volunteers will be expected to take part in monthly conference calls and to take on specific assignments necessary to ensure a successful event. 

Satellite Broadcast on IPM for Mosquitoes and Rodents
Aug 28, 2003:
A National Center for Environmental Health and Public Health Training Network satellite broadcast and webcast entitled "Managing Rodents and Mosquitoes Through Integrated Pest Management" will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, 12:00 - 1: 30 PM Central Time.  The broadcast/webcast will provide viewers with information on IPM as the most effective approach to reduce the overall threat from these pests.

Idaho Potato Growers Pursue Eco-Label 
Aug 21, 2003:
  Potato Growers of Idaho was recently awarded an IPM grant by the EPA as part of a program to reduce levels of certain chemicals used in Pacific Northwest agriculture. The group agreed to develop a comprehensive IPM approach to potato production that may be governed by a third party and include “environmentally- conscious” labeling for Idaho spuds. 

Northeastern Pest Management Center Expands Funding for IPM
Aug 12, 2003: The Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service has recently approved additional funding for the Center.  Totaling $4.3 million over the next four years, the Center will use the money to build on their successes and strengthen their priorities. The Center’s name will also change to the Northeastern Integrated Pest Management Center (NE IPMC) to more accurately reflect the manner in which they address issues, a change that will occur for all four regional Centers nationwide.

National IPM Roadmap Unveiled
Aug 12, 2003: In February 2002, IPM leaders at the USDA assembled a group of consultants, farmers, IPM coordinators, and industry and environmental representatives.  Over the next 15 months, IPM leaders from the USDA used this feedback to develop a consensus document that would serve as a guideline at the federal level. Last month the USDA released the roadmap.

New York Publishes IPM Guidelines on the Web
Aug 12, 2003:
New York state's IPM program is taking advantage of web programming technology to make the latest IPM expertise readily available online with Cornell’s Pest Management Guidelines.  New York’s IPM staff has partnered with web experts and students in Cornell’s computer science department to create a web site for trees and shrubs, field crops, and turfgrass IPM.

La Vega School District Fighting Pests With IPM
Aug 8, 2003:
Independent Texas School District, La Vega, has received the first Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Pride Award.  La Vega's school district includes five campuses and 47 buildings.  Janet Hurley, coordinator of the Southwest Technical Resource Center for IPM at the Texas A&M University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Dallas, will be at the school district's August 16th meeting to present the award. 

NEPMA Fall Training Seminar and Exposition Scheduled
July 25, 2003:
The NEPMA Fall Training Seminar and Exposition will be held this November 7 - 8, 2003 in Marlborough, MA. Confirmed speakers include Al St. Cyr, Head of Food Safety Education, AIB International in Manhattan, KS, Jeff May, a nationally known expert and author on mold and MA licensed home inspector and Robert (Bobby) Corrigan, Ph.D., of RMC Pest Management Consulting in Richmond, IN.  Other exciting special features and programs are in the planning stages and will be announced shortly. 

Illinois EPA Publishes New Website Entitled "Green Schools"
July 18, 2003:
This new website includes the informative 24-page Green Schools Checklist as well as a publication about mercury alternatives for schools.  The Green Schools Checklist includes information about energy use, solid waste generation, indoor air quality, pest management, mold growth, water consumption, laboratory waste, building renovation and purchasing and more. Texas School District Receives IPM Pride Award
July 11, 2003: The average parent may not give much thought to what dangerous insect, rodent or poisonous plant might be lurking on their child's school grounds this fall.  But at La Vega ISD, a small school district north of Waco, Texas, school maintenance staff thinks about it a lot. Urban IPM and Pesticide Education Coordinator sought for Washington State University
June 3, 2003: 
An Extension Coordinator is being sought for the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center in Washington State University, Puyallup, WA.  The position is a full-time, 9 or 12-month, one-year renewable, administrative professional position.  

Senate Panel Kills Bid to Ban Pesticides from Schools
July 2nd, 2003: SACRAMENTO -
Legislation to prohibit dozens of toxic pesticides from being used in California public schools was shelved Tuesday by a Senate committee.  AB1006 died without a vote Tuesday from the Senate Agriculture and Water Resources Committee, chaired by Sen. IPM Institute's School Standards Version 3.1 Now Available Online
June 9, 2003: Version 3.1 is available in html and PDF format from the IPM Institute’s Web site. Version 3.1 includes minor updates to web site urls that have changed since Version 2.0 was released in November of 2000, including url changes for all references to the University of Florida’s school IPM site.  Version 3.0 had been revised to become a companion document to the IPM STAR® certification program.  Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Midwest Food Alliance Partnerships Provide Boost for Certified Farmers
June 25, 2003:
Farmers raising food using environmentally friendly and socially responsible methods received a boost recently when Midwest Food Alliance (MWFA) signed new partnerships with Roots & Fruits Cooperative Produce, one of the region's oldest distributors of natural food products, and Sodexho USA, the nation's largest contract food service provider. Intel and Food Alliance Partner in the Cafeteria
June 24, 2003:
Intel, the world's largest chip manufacturer, has recently partnered with the eco-label, Food Alliance.  Employees at all seven Hillsboro, Oregon Intel locations will be able to choose Food Alliance certified products in their cafeteria.

USDA Honors Successful Eco-Potato Partnership
June 18, 2003: World Wildlife Fund, Wisconsin potato growers and University of Wisconsin researchers were congratulated for efforts to improve the environment.  Their research was recognized on June 13th as a recipient of the Department of Agriculture's prestigious "Secretary's Honor Award." 

IPM Part of EQIP Incentive Program 
June 13, 2003: The USDA is releasing nearly $695 million in the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) through National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) for reimbursement on working lands for various conservation practices, including Integrated Pest Management. Full article.

USAID and Land O'Lakes Seek Volunteers
May 15, 2003:  Land O'Lakes International Development Division is implementing a USAID-funded project in Kosovo under a subagreement with the International Refugee Committee (IRC) working with producers of tree fruit crops.  Volunteers are needed in Kosovo for general orchard management for tree fruit crops, IPM/pesticide safety training/assistance for tree fruit crops, and fertilizer and water management for orchards.   The Journal of Extension recently published an article entitled "An Assessment of Consumer Preferences for IPM- and Organically Grown Produce."  The article includes the results of an extensive survey done in South Carolina to explore ways to make farming more profitable.

Pest Management Issues in Urban Settings Discussed

Grant Awarded to Study New Biological Control Tool
Apr. 21, 2003:
A group of researchers from Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences was recently awarded a three-year, $162,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Agriculture research program, to study a new class of biopesticides for use in greenhouse tomato production. More.

Report Documents Safer Schools That Protect Children From Unnecessary Pesticide Exposure
Apr. 18, 2003:
  In a report released today, schools from across the country document a growing trend to adopt safer practices that dramatically reduce pesticides in the schools, providing children with a healthier learning environment, according to the authors. With descriptions of 27 school districts of all sizes from 19 states, the report, Safer Schools: Achieving a Healthy Learning Environment Through Integrated Pest Management, describes a growing commitment to adopt practices that respond to mounting evidence that pesticides pose a public health hazard while non-toxic, economically feasible pest management options are available. 

Central California Winegrowers Project Submits Request for Proposals
Apr. 14, 2003:  The Central California Winegrowers (CCW) is seeking proposals for project coordination professional services.  The CCW is a non-profit organization dedicated to viticulture research, demonstration and outreach activities to winegrowers and vintners to enhance the quality, reputation and marketability of Central California winegrapes, grape concentrate, and wines.  The initial consulting contract would be for a 6-month period with a target start date of April 22, 2003 or when a suitable candidate is found.  The estimated budget is between $2,500 to $3,000 per month for services plus travel and other necessary expenses.  The contract may be renewed for an additional 6- to 12-month period (possibly longer) depending on available funding. 

National School IPM Web site Available as a CD-ROM
Apr. 14, 2003: The National School IPM Web site is now available complete on a CD-ROM for use in stand-alone or networking environments for both PCs and Macs. It requires a CD-ROM drive and graphical browser.  While it may be used off line, it also contains all the hot links that the Web site does, as well as a link to the School IPM Web site itself.  The cost of the CD is $8.  

Earth Pledge Offers Northeast Farmers Third-Party Certification
Apr. 14, 2003: Two nonprofit organizations, New York City-based Earth Pledge and Oregon's Food Alliance, have joined forces to bring Food Alliance certification to the Northeast in an effort to build supply and demand for sustainably produced foods. Food Alliance is the fastest growing eco-label in the United States, with more than 175 growers of 42 crops certified in 12 states.  Increased market value for Northeast farmers, greater availability of sustainable food products for consumers, and greater public awareness regarding the economic, social, and cultural benefits of sustainable agriculture and local farmer support are expected outcomes of the program, according to Earth Pledge.  To be certified, farms and ranches must meet strict criteria for pesticide reduction, soil and water conservation, wildlife habitat protection, safe and fair working conditions, and the humane treatment of animals.  Source: http://www.earthpledge.org/

Executive Director Positions Available for Pesticide Alternatives Organizations 
Feb. 7, 2003:
  Safer Pest Control Project N.F.P. (SPCP), a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing pesticide use and promoting safer alternatives throughout Illinois, seeks an Executive Director.  SPCP’s programs address both the public health risks and the environmental impacts of pesticides.  Texans for Alternatives to Pesticides, a small environmental health organization, also seek a full time Executive Director.  More.

Pennsylvania Adopts Textbook With IPM Unit for Use in Schools
Feb. 10, 2003: Pennsylvania has adopted an environmental textbook that includes an IPM unit for use in its public schools.  The state is the nation's first to require environmental studies, including integrated pest management, as part of its core curriculum.  Inclusion of IPM studies in the textbook was mandated by a law that also requires advance notification of pesticide applications on school grounds. The new textbook, which is intended for 9th and 10th grade students, was published by the Globe Pearson Learning Group.  More.

Federal School IPM Legislation Reintroduced
Feb. 7, 2003:
The Federal School IPM Legislation has been raised, again.  On January 7, 2003, it was introduced as House Bill HR 121 and referred to the House Committee. The bill requires local educational agencies and schools to implement integrated pest management systems to minimize the use of pesticides in schools and to provide parents, guardians, and employees with notice of the use of pesticides in schools, and for other purposes.  

2003 Texas IPM Coordinator Training Course 
Feb. 3, 2003:
  All IPM Coordinators within the state of Texas must attend a six hour class in order to fulfill the requirements specified in Section 595.11 of the Texas Structural Pest Control Act. However, the class is open to all persons who are interested in learning more about the School IPM law and the role of the IPM Coordinator.  The course will also offer an Advanced Coordinator training open to anyone wanting to learn how to effectively implement and maintain their IPM program. Part of the planned training experience will be a section on Outdoor (Landscape) IPM for school grounds, conducting a facility inspection in order to maintain a list of structural and landscape improvements and much more.  

New Award Recognizes School IPM 
Jan. 20, 2003:  Public school districts in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico implementing integrated pest management (IPM) programs to control insects and weeds are encouraged to apply for an award recognizing their IPM efforts.  The Southwest Technical Resources Center for IPM in Schools and Childcare Facilities (SWTRC) announces the first IPM PrideTM Award competition.  The goal of the recognition program is to instill a sense of pride by schools in their IPM programs.  Cash awards of $1,000 and $500 will be given to schools with outstanding IPM programs in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Jan. 13, 2003:  A new insurance policy, offered by participating crop insurance companies and reinsured by the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation is set for release.  The product insures farmers against yield loss if they follow state extension recommendations for nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer rates.  The policy presages the potential for insurance to cover other BMPs, including IPM. Fourth National IPM Symposium/Workshop Reports 180 Poster Submissions
Dec. 18, 2002:  The Fourth National Integrated Pest Management Symposium/Workshop, to be held on April 8-10 2003 in Indianapolis, IN, has received more than 180 abstracts for poster presentations.  The symposium also includes sessions for invited speakers, workshops, and informal conferences.  All disciplines relating to IPM including weed science, plant pathology, vertebrate management, entomology, nematology, horticulture, agronomy, communications, economics, sociology, etc. are encouraged to participate.  Additional poster abstracts will be accepted on a space-available basis.  

EPA PESP Selects NYC Board of Education as 2002 PESP Champion
Dec. 18, 2002:  The US Environmental Protection Agency Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP) has selected 18 participants as PESP Champions for outstanding efforts towards risk reduction and promoting IPM. The New York City Board of Education's IPM program, serving schools with more than 1.2 million students, is among the award winners.

National Foundation for IPM Education Issues Call for Proposals
Dec. 4th, 2002:
The National Foundation for IPM Education (NFIPME) has issued its call for proposals for 2003 PESP Project Grants.  NFIPME will be mailing paper copies of the call to the primary contacts for all PESP members late this week/early next week.  The total funding available will vary with the level of commitment BPPD makes to the cooperative agreement with NFIPME.  Timing of the final selection will also depend on future funding.  The call is open until January 31.  Details are in the call. National Conference on Integrated Fruit Production
Dec. 4th, 2002:
Plan to attend the upcoming National Conference on Integrated Fruit Production, February 3-4, 2003, in Montreal.  The conference features two days of presentations and panel discussions by leading experts on growing, labeling and marketing ecologically-produced fruit.  The event will culminate in an industry panel and participant discussion to explore the positioning of Canadian IFP-grown apples in the domestic and export markets. 

Pennsylvania State IPM Program Prepares Information Packet for School IPM in Pennsylvania
Oct. 10, 2002:
Public schools across Pennsylvania will have until the end of the year, 2002, to comply with new legislation requiring them to give notification before applying pesticides and to adopt integrated pest management plans.  To help schools meet the deadline, the Pennsylvania IPM Program has prepared information packets and sent them out to every school district in the state.  

57th Annual University Pest Management Conference to be Held at Texas A&M
Nov. 25, 2002:  The 57th Texas A&M University Pest Management Conference will be held January 8-10, 2003, in College Station at the Brazos Center.  There will be presentations emphasizing IPM in schools, including Lawn & Ornamental, Weeds, Termites, and General Pest categories. Also included in the conference are the "hands-on" Insect Identification Workshop and a full day of State-required Training for Technicians and Non-Commercial Applicators.

EPA Launches Healthy School Environments Web Portal
Oct. 7, 2002:  More than 53 million children and almost 3 million adults spend a significant portion of their days in approximately 112,000 public and private school buildings, many of which are old and inadequately maintained, and which often contain environmental conditions that inhibit learning and pose increased risks to the health of children and staff.  The Healthy School Environments web page is intended to serve as a portal to on-line resources to help facility managers, school administrators, architects, design engineers, school nurses, parents, teachers and staff address environmental health issues in schools. Visitors can browse resources by geographic area, or search all resources by entering specific keywords into the search box at the top of each page.

Los Angeles Unified School District Parents Gain Right to Know of Toxic Exposure
September 20, 2002: Every parent has gained a right to know of pesticide application to which their children may be exposed if they are enrolled in the Los Angeles Unified School District. At the beginning of the school year, parents are given a list of pesticide products that have been approved for use at LAUSD sites. Parents who wish advance notification of each pesticide application at their child’s school will receive notification by completing the “Right to Know” form and sending it to the school Principal. Notification exceptions may occur under emergency circumstances that warrant an immediate response. More.

Report on Pesticide Residues Released.  A Consumers Union research team has released a report comparing pesticide residues on conventionally grown, IPM and organic produce. The study reports that organic produce had 1/3 as many pesticide residues as conventional and 1/2 as many as IPM.  Conventional produce was the most likely to contain residues and organic least likely.  Produce grown and marketed with an IPM or "No Detectable Residues" (NDR) claim had residues higher than organic, but lower than those in conventionally grown food.

Association executive director Brian Snyder was quoted as saying Saturday at the group's annual convention that, "I'm probably most concerned that lunch usually is not considered an educational time in schools. The teaching stops, and kids are taken to the cafeteria; then the teaching starts again when they get back to the classroom. We want to make lunch part of the learning process."

Cathleen Lane has joined CORE Values Northeast (CVN) as Executive Director.  Lane is based in Boston, MA at the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) offices under a new agreement between CLF and CVN.  CVN is one of the oldest operating IPM-based eco-labels in the US, certifying tree fruit growers since 1995.

The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) is an independent, non-partisan investigative arm of Congress.  The GAO studies how taxpayer dollars are spent and makes recommendations to Congress and other agencies on how to improve the effectiveness of programs and expenditures. Two IPM-based Labeling Efforts Break New Ground 
The Mauna Kea Banana Company, approved by the Rainforest Alliance's Eco-OK label program, has achieved the highest possible rating by the University of Hawaii's IPM Program.  The assessment used an IPM protocol, or scoring tool, specifically developed for banana production in Hawaii and modeled after the National Potato Council's IPM Protocol for Potatoes.  The Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association's collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund has yielded a draft IPM Standard for potatoes in Wisconsin that promises qualifying growers use of a new eco-label on qualifying potatoes.

California set to join states requiring qualifications for persons applying pesticides in schools.
California Assembly Bill 786 awaits Governor Gray Davis' signature, and requires any personnel applying pesticides in schools to have annual training in pesticide safety and handling.  Upon signing, California will join New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia in requiring training.  Bill text.  The bill joins AB 2260, the Healthy Schools Act of 2000, also awaiting signature and previously vetoed by Davis in 1999.  The bill would require prior notification of pesticide applications and IPM policies in schools.  Update on 9/25/00: AB 786 was vetoed, AB 2260 was signed and enacted.

A new document has been drafted for use by field corn producers and their advisors to learn about IPM and Best Management Practices (BMPs).  The draft lists practices and ranks them as most desirable, intermediate and least desirable, allowing users to  identify opportunities to  reduce environmental impacts.  Located at www.iatp.org/labels/, click on "Resources" to locate the downloadable files.  The authors are looking for partners to further develop the tool, and improve its usefulness for corn producers.

A survey was conducted of state IPM coordinators and others to identify IPM assessment tools, in some cases termed "IPM Elements," "IPM Guidelines" of "IPM Protocols." 34 states responded to the survey.
