The National School IPM 2015 Steering Committee and the North Central, Northeastern, Southern and Western School IPM Regional Working Groups Announce the Child Care and School IPM Recognition Award winners.

Thank you to all nominators and nominees for your essays. With great appreciation we honor the following Child Care and School IPM Recognition Award winners for their outstanding work in safeguarding children's health by facilitating the implementation of IPM in childcare facilities and schools statewide and nationally.

As a leader in the U.S. Army Environmental Center, Lieutenant Colonel Alvey has helped multiple child care facilities implement cost-effective IPM practices and even attain IPM STAR certification. She contributes to panel presentations that foster school IPM and actively promotes IPM in housing throughout the U.S.

Tom Chavez

Through the Tools for Schools program, 27-year maintenance veteran Tom Chavez instructs students and staff of Round Rock Independent School District about preventative maintenance, pest tracking and safely eliminating pests from the classroom. While collaborating with the Texas Department of Agriculture and the City of Austin's “Grow Green” Program, Mr. Chavez has saved Round Rock ISD considerable amounts of time and money by teaching his school how to use IPM.

Eco-Healthy Child Care

Since 2005, the Oregon Environmental Council's Eco-Health Child Care (EHCC) program has educated child care providers about how to implement low to no cost changes in practices and purchases that decreasing children's exposure to environmental hazards by addressing air quality, household chemicals and pest management in child care facilities. Thanks to EHCC's efforts, more than 1,200 facilities caring for more than 48,000 children in 47 states have committed to safer pest management based on IPM principles.

Sherry Glick

When national conversation turns toward pesticide use and pest management, Sherry Glick, coordinator for the U.S. EPA's Pesticides and Schools program, raises her voice to advocate for IPM practices in schools across the country. Ms. Glick has not only served as an advisory member for the School IPM 2015 Steering Committee, she also focuses on protecting children's environmental health through her leadership in the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program and the IPM International Symposiums.

Dr. Dawn Gouge

With tremendous energy and passion, Dr. Dawn Gouge, urban entomologist at the University of Arizona and leader of the Western School IPM Working Group, spends countless hours educating university specialists, health professionals, and school IPM project organizers about IPM best practices. As co—author of School IPM 2015: A Strategic Plan for Integrated Pest Management in Schools in the United States, Dr. Gouge continues to pursue public and private funding to support school IPM projects nationwide.

David Henderson

After establishing two IPM programs in South Carolina, David Henderson now oversees the in-house pest control program for Texas' Spring Independent School District. As assistant IPM coordinator and applicator, David works with Spring's construction and transportation department to eliminate pest entrances to school buildings and buses. Mr. Henderson also saves Spring ISD money by purchasing effective pest control equipment and keeping complete electronic records for all pesticide applications.

Janet Hurley

Often going above the call of duty, Janet Hurley, school IPM specialist for Texas AgriLife Extension Service and co-leader of the Southern School IPM Working Group, has been a major supporter of school IPM, both locally and nationally. In addition to helping other North Carolina school systems start their IPM programs, Chris educates teachers and administrators on basic IPM methods such as using monitoring devices and excluding pest from buildings. Mr. Mills hopes to earn IPM Star certification for his school system in the near future.

Dr. Godfrey Nalyanya

Dr. Godfrey Nalyanya, an urban IPM specialist at North Carolina State University, has been a vital participant in facilitating the success of North Carolina's Children's Health Act of 2006 and has moved many North Carolina school districts toward full implementation of IPM. In addition to developing school IPM guidelines, Dr. Nalyanya's research produced data linking tangible health benefits related to cockroach allergen reduction with the implementation of IPM programs in sensitive environments.

Dr. Mark Shour
