Dust (D)

Dust pesticide formulations contain dry particles that are designed to be applied dry.  Granular formulations, which contain granules of material, may also present a hazard as dust accumulates in the container from breakdown of granules.

Due to the following hazards associated with dusts, less hazardous options are recommended where available.

Dust formulations do not meet our criteria for least-toxic and should always be used with special precautions, see below.

Hazards

  • Breathing in the dry particles can be hazardous to health.

  • Dry particles can enter eyes, nose and mouth and be hazardous to health.

  • Dry particles can become airborne and drift away from the intended application site.

  • Dry particles can become airborne and be inhaled long after they are applied.

Precautions

  • Use ready-to-use gel or liquid formulations instead.

  • Apply dusts only to cracks, crevices or other openings that can be sealed after application.

  • Always wear proper personal protective equipment such as goggles, respirators and gloves.

  • Never apply pesticides when unprotected individuals or exposed food or eating utensils are nearby.

  • Always clean up spills immediately.
